Duties and responsibilities: Orthopedic surgeons treat patients' musculoskeletal systems. This means they care for patients who have problems with their bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons, according to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. The United States has more than 20,400 practicing orthopedic surgeons. Orthopedic surgeons must graduate from medical school and then complete five years of residency training before practicing.

Salary: $519,000

Education: Doctor of Medicine degree and 4-5 year residency in a hospital
State medical license and board certification in orthopedic surgery 

Skills required: a high degree of manual dexterity
good hand-eye co-ordination, excellent vision and visual-spatial awareness
good organisational ability and effective decision-making skills
excellent communication skills to deal with a wide range of colleagues, patients and their families
emotional resilience, a calm temperament and the ability to work well under pressure
physical stamina to cope with the demands of surgery
the ability to lead and manage a team effectively
